Have you got a problem with an Inspiron or Studio laptop? Have you been through Dell hell? Quote: She was the 8th person I spoke with after being transferred to person after person saying I was transferred to the wrong department. Dell is notorious for putting people through hoops - making the customer do all the troubleshooting before they are prepared to accept your laptop for repair.
The standard for Dell is a one year limited warranty covering parts and on-call software support. If you're outside that window, you may find Computer Mechanics a very cost-effective alternative and much, much quicker.
Dell offer a number of support packages when you purchase, including a number of Pro-Support options; everything from an extended battery service to a laptop tracking facility in case of theft. ("Here's the bad news; it's at your brother's house").
They will seek to diagnose your problem remotely (they charge for it out of warranty) and commonly recommend you purchase a new motherboard. However, in some cases the motherboard can be repaired and if Computer Mechanics do this, you can save a tidy sum.
Not to put too fine a point on it, you may also find that having a local company work on your laptop is a more pleasant experience than a number of very long sessions on the phone with the Dell support team.
LCD screen problems are common with all laptops, Dell is no exception. Other common Dell problems include power connectors, motherboards and hard drives. Note that the Dell warranty doesn't cover shipping fees. If you have to buy a new hard drive you may find that your replacement bill through Dell is about the cost of a new notebook.
And realistically, if you're buying a low end Dell like an Inspiron and using it 12 hours a day in a truck in Afghanistan you're probably going to wish you spent more money and got a Latitude.
