Spyware

4 Jul 2004 10:0:43

Spyware is the name given to a whole lot of different programs that you didn’t knowingly install but run on your computer. They are mostly tracking programs which identify which web sites you visit and pass that information back to the writer of the program. That information can then be sold to other companies. But it gets worse. Some companies then use the information they collect to bombard you with pop-up ads or “hijack” your web browser so that ads appear where they normally wouldn’t.

And then it gets much worse! Some of these programs install software called keystroke loggers which record exactly what you type; i.e. password information. Do you do your banking on-line?

There are two leading spyware removal programs; spybot and ad-aware. Both are free. Nortons and MacAfee will happily sell you programs that do the same thing but information we'e seen suggests they don't work quite as well so save your money.

Don't use file sharing sites like kazaa

More to the point, don't let your kids use them. Most have spyware. We recommend against installing kazaa. In fact, we recommend uninstalling kazaa. Here's a program that does it. If you really want to use music sharing products try WinMX or SoulSeek.

MS Office GAME

Ribbon Hero is the Microsoft game that sneakily trains you in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. Do challenges, compete, share on Facebook. No, we don't know why you'd want to share it on Facebook. But then we're not big on Farmville either. Versions of Officer earlier than 2007 won't handle it. You'll have to Read the Manual.

Hacking into mobiles

An American security guy has demonstrated how he can intercept mobile calls on the GSM mobile phone network using relatively cheap hardware. Scary stuff since that network is the world's most popular and is predominant in Australia. Newer network technologies (3G) are not vulnerable. *Going back to pen and ink*.

Biz card transcription

Networkers of the world, pay attention. Here's how it works. You take photos of the business cards you collect at the conference/function, then send them to CardMunch. They have people transcribe the contents (guaranteeing accuracy) into a web based address book you then sync with your phone. Time saver, much. Via Mashable.
