RansomWareYou know, there is no word in the English language you can't put 'ware' after. Anyway, here's a twist to the old, 'we've taken over your computer now give us money' routine. This scam gets you to pay the bad guys' phone bill in the Ukraine. Next thing they'll have you doing their washing. Mon, 12 Jul 2010

Track yr laptopHere's a free piece of software that helps you locate your stolen laptop. What? You didn't know it's missing? If your notebook or laptop has a wireless card, PREY locates it for you using the web control panel. It doesn't work if they wipe your disk but apparently thieves often look for valuable info before they do that. While they're looking, the cops arrive. Book him, Danno. Source. Mon, 12 Jul 2010

Symantec gaffPoor old Symantec. They put together a site to warn people about computer security during the World Cup and failed to properly protect their own web site from spammers, exposing visitors to risk. Now fixed. How embarrassing. Source.Mon, 12 Jul 2010

Fake peopleThis is chilling: a security researcher created a fake profile on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter in order to show how easy it is to collect information from the military, security and intelligence community using social media. The lesson: don't friend people unless you know them. Your secret chocolate cake recipe is at risk. Source. Mon, 26 Jul 2010

The Arc Touch mouseThe rumoured new Microsoft Arc Touch mouse. Looks very sexy but not yet released. Funny comment on that blog: "I too have an encyclopaedic knowledge of the capabilities and limitations of yet to be released hardware." |

Pretty desktopsSmashing Magazine invites designers to contribute monthly calendar designs that people can use as desktops on their PCs. Lots of elegant choices for September, though many designers seem confused about what season it is. Includes a number of Ramadan desktops for our Islamic readers. |

MS Office GAMERibbon Hero is the Microsoft game that sneakily trains you in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. Do challenges, compete, share on Facebook. No, we don't know why you'd want to share it on Facebook. But then we're not big on Farmville either. Versions of Officer earlier than 2007 won't handle it. You'll have to Read the Manual. |

Best Windows laptopsElectric Pig journos chose the Dell Studio 15, the HP Envy 15 (15 is big this year), the Samsung Q430 & 320 and the ASUS EeePC1201N as the best value laptops on the market.
