  • Too good job offers

For young people short of a dollar it's easy to get sucked in to money laundering on the Internet. F-Secure has an example of how people are recruited online to get money out of hacked bank accounts. If your kids are Internet savvy but real-world naive, you might want to warn them about this.

  • Re: Job Interview

An email with that heading asks the user to download and update their resume at a job seeking site. Clicking that link would lead to you getting the Koobface trojan virus, so don't go there. Source

  • Can you run Win 7?

Don't be sucked in by an email offering to "FInd out if your PC can run Windows 7". It loads the trojan virus on to your PC when you run the application. Here is the legitimate web page that answers the question. Source. Other source.

  • iTunes gift certs

Beware of emails purporting to come from Apple and offering you a link to a web site that checks the balance of your gift card account. Screen shot of a typical email here. One way to tell it's a fake? It won't have your real user name in the email.

  • Settings on yr mailbox

... have NOT been changed. Despite what some stupid spam emails might argue. The email links to a web page that downloads a trojan virus. Situation Normal. Source.

  • Try not to laugh

The new Try Not to Laugh worm is spreading through Facebook very quickly. It's harmless; just sticks posts up on your wall saying 'try not to laugh'. And, spooky, this week is the Wild West Comedy Festival in Perth. It's just a coincidence, no need to panic.

If you click on a Try Not to Laugh wall post, it takes you to a page that has an invisible frame. Click anywhere on THAT page and you'll spread the worm to YOUR wall. Here are the screenshots etc.

  • FB privacy

Facebook's privacy issues (including the fact that they have made it so complicated) have landed them the front page of Time. You can use Privacy Check to see just how exposed you (and your friends) are.

  • FB Notification

Beware Facebook Notifications arriving by email. They are fake and potential infectors of your computer if you click the link. A legit Facebook notification such as the Weekly Update, will have your user name in the body of the message.

The rumoured new Microsoft Arc Touch mouse. Looks very sexy but not yet released. Funny comment on that blog: "I too have an encyclopaedic knowledge of the capabilities and limitations of yet to be released hardware."

MS Office GAME

Ribbon Hero is the Microsoft game that sneakily trains you in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. Do challenges, compete, share on Facebook. No, we don't know why you'd want to share it on Facebook. But then we're not big on Farmville either. Versions of Officer earlier than 2007 won't handle it. You'll have to Read the Manual.

Best Windows laptops

Electric Pig journos chose the Dell Studio 15, the HP Envy 15 (15 is big this year), the Samsung Q430 & 320 and the ASUS EeePC1201N as the best value laptops on the market. They're a UK site but all those models are available in Australia. You'll need to check the local prices of course.
