Here's what you need to know about upgrading from Vista to Windows 7. Actually, you don't need to know all of this, pick the relevant bits. But FIRST, this applies to everyone: back up before you upgrade. If you don't know how, call us because things can and do go wrong during upgrades. You can minimize the chance of problems by making sure your Windows Vista installation is as up to date as it can be and making sure any installed application has its latest updates or the latest version of the software installed. Older versions of Nero Burning Suite for example, have known issues and can cause an upgrade to fail, leaving you stuck between Windows 7 and Vista without a working system. Now, Win 7 is a bit particular about how you upgrade. Windows Vista Home Basic and Home Premium can upgrade to Win 7 Home Premium. Windows Vista Business upgrades to Windows 7 Professional. The quick fix: any version of Windows Vista will upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate because guess what, that's the expensive one! The slow fix: Wipe your Vista or XP installation entirely and add Windows 7 as a fresh install. Complicated stuff: Win 7 ships with 32 bit and 64 bit versions. If you have 32 bit Vista, you can't upgrade to 64 bit Win 7. 64 bit is better and if you have a newish box and have the option, make sure you go 64. |
